Having run business units for large corporations for his entire career, Charles Hartz already knew the ins and outs of running a successful business. But he decided he wanted to start up his own business: a series of Dunkin Donuts franchises in Aiken, South Carolina.

Never having started a business before, Hertz turned to his local SCORE chapter for guidance.

Hartz now operates three Dunkin Donuts locations with 50 employees and $2.5 million in annual revenue. 

How SCORE helped. 

Before starting up his business, Hartz met with SCORE mentor Bill Roberts and several other members of the Greater Aiken, South Carolina SCORE chapter. By meeting with a mentor biweekly for several months, Hartz gained expertise in the finer points of financing, lease negotiation, business planning, and marketing plans.  

Hartz also attended SCORE workshops in Aiken and intends to keep doing so as his business grows. “As a small-business person, this is one of the best ways for me to continue to learn and stay current on many business topics,” says Hartz.
